Increase RAM using Swap File and Swap Partition

Increase RAM using Swap File and Swap Partition
NOTE:
I spent hours updating my guides and I don't ask you to press that THANKS button, be kind enough not to copy my guides to other forums. Iknow some noobs want to make a name on other forum boards... but hey, that's not an excuse!
Thread featured on XDA Portal
POSTED MAY 29, 2012 AT 4:00 AM BY POORCOLLEGEGUY
WARNING: This mod may degrade SD card life.
What you need:
  • MiniTool Partition Wizard for SD Card Partitioning
  • A MicroSD HC 4GB or higher class 6 or class 10
  • MicroSD HC Card Adapter
  • A card reader (if your pc doesn't have card reader built in | USB Mount is not adviseable)
  • Swapper2 from Google Play Store [DOWNLOAD]
  • ADB Shell or terminal Emulator (to check if swap is activated)
  • Make sure you have BusyBox installed
Before we start, lets do some reading . . .

RAM
What is RAM
Random Access Memory (RAM) is temporary data storage that the CPU uses during calculations. The more RAM a device has, the more calculated results the CPU can store - which means less time the CPU has to do the same thing over and over again. In other words, the CPU can check RAM to see if it has already made a particular calculation in the recent past. If it has, it can use the pre-computed results instead of wasting processing time recomputing the same calculation. In short, more RAM means a more efficient (and faster) device.
SWAP
What is SWAP
Swap is, in short, virtual RAM. With swap, a small portion of the hard drive is set aside and used like RAM. The computer will attempt to keep as much information as possible in RAM until the RAM is full. At that point, the computer will begin moving inactive blocks of memory (called pages) to the hard disk, freeing up RAM for active processes. If one of the pages on the hard disk needs to be accessed again, it will be moved back into RAM, and a different inactive page in RAM will be moved onto the hard disk ('swapped'). The trade off is disks and SD cards are considerably slower than physical RAM, so when something needs to be swapped, there is a noticeable performance hit.
Unlike traditional swap, Android's Memory Manager kills inactive processes to free up memory. Android signals to the process, then the process will usually write out a small bit of specific information about its state (for example, Google Maps may write out the map view coordinates; Browser might write the URL of the page being viewed) and then the process exits. When you next access that application, it is restarted: the application is loaded from storage, and retrieves the state information that it saved when it last closed. In some applications, this makes it seem as if the application never closed at all. This is not much different from traditional swap, except that Android apps are specially programed to write out very specific information, making Android's Memory Manager more efficient that swap.
Step by Step Guide
How to create Swap Partition
Using MiniTool Partition Wizard
  • Plug in you MicroSD HC Card to your computer using the card adapter. (Do not use USB Mount)
  • Open MiniTool Partition Wizard and look for the card
  • Right Click on it and select Delete Partition
  • Click on Apply to Delete the Partition
  • Right Click on it again and select Create Partition
Set the partitions as follows:
1st partition:
Label: Android-SD
Create as: Primary
File System: Fat32
Partition size: as much as you want!
2nd partition:
Label: Android-EXT3 (2nd partition is for EXT which you can use for A2SD or Link2SD)
Create as: Primary
File System: EXT3 (be it a custom kernel or ROM with EXT4 support, use EXT3 still -play safe! )
Partition size: MIN: 256 MB MAX: 1024MB (1GB)
3rd partition:
Label: (do not put anything)
Create as: Primary
File System: Linux Swap
Partition size: MIN: 32MB MAX: 1024MB(1GB) RECOMMENDED: 256MB
  • After creating partitions, click Apply to apply changes.
Using ClockWorkMod
  • Reboot to Recovery
  • Go to Advanced and Debugging
  • Select partition SD card and select the partition size that delights you
How to use Swap
For us to be able to use swap file or swap partition, we need to use Swapper2 which you can get from Google Play.
  • Download and Install Swapper2 (of course)
  • After installing, open Swapper2 and navigate to Menu > Settings
Swapper preferences: (for kernels that doesn't have swap partition support)
  • Run swapper at startup (put a check)
  • Swap place: /sd card/swapfile.swp (you can place it in a folder if you don't like a messy sd card structure )
  • Swap size: MIN: 10 MB MAX: 256MB RECOMMENDED: 32MB (choose any)
  • Swapiness: RECOMMENDED: 10MB SYSTEM DEFAULT: 60MB MAX: 100MB (choose any)
  • Safe unmount (put a check)
  • Safe remount (put a check)
Advanced preferences: (for Kernels that supports swap partition only)
Use swap partition (put a check)
Swap partition: /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
  • After setting preferences, press back and tap on "ON" to turn on swap. Reboot afterwards
How can I tell if swap is running?
Go to the terminal emulator - or open adb shell - and run 'free'.
If it looks like this (with zeros in the swap line), you do not have swap:

If it looks like this (with anything other than zeros in the swap line), you do have swap:

NOTE:
You need to turn off swap before you mount SD via USB, if you don't you will not be able to mount sd as swapfile is active and set to read only which will deny request to mount USB Storage.
Get Swapper2 here:

*dual boot animation - its useless dont use it ., as it can cause bootlop  issue.
*lock apps in ram - it ll eat up ur  ram allowinbg u to load ur selected apps faster..[ recommended for 512 mb  and above ram users.
               *gps config- don't change anything
*device hidden menu- leave it it's useless
    ## Now go to tweaks section
               * network & internet- wifi scan interval _ increase it but it'll cost ur battery a lot
               *   wifi connect speed tweak - increase wifi speed
    ## Multitasking
*oom groupings- select any option accordingly how much u use ur phone
*minifree values- set it like above

*android logger - disabling will provide a little  performance
*telephony-proximity sensor delay - set it to 25 to enable ur proximikty sensor work instantly
Now  we come to last section i.e Miscellaneous click on all options except 1 build prop tweak quick power on- u can use it .. basically it causes bootlop issues n it generally depends on what processor u r using in ur phonme( recommended qualcom chipset)

Save ur Android phone's battery(no application needed)

Save ur Android phone's battery(no application needed)

Android smartphones like LG, HTC, Samsung and Micromax are really powerful, but unfortunately, they don't have endless battery life. Android smartphones consumes more battery compare to other Mobile phone. Because Android Smartphones have thinner designs with less room for batteries, larger and brighter screens, faster dual-core processors, more software that runs in the background, and power-hungry GPS radios all share responsibility. Networks move from 2G to 3G then 4G networks. So try these tips to extend your handset's battery life.

How to see which apps & hardware are using max battery: - Click to Navigate button --> system setting --> Battery Use to see an organized breakdown of what's consuming your phone's battery. If you see an application you barely use or a feature you never use, uninstall the app or turn off the feature.

1. Set brightness to dim or adjust automatically: - Set brightness to dim it is best for your battery and you’re Eyes. If you don’t want to set on dim then use automatically brightness adjust apps. Android Market has lots of app for this.

 2. Turn off unnecessary hardware: - It is great that today's phones have LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi, GPRS and Bluetooth, but do you really need all four activated 24 hours? These app & hardware keeps drain on your battery in background. If your phone has a power control widget, you can use it to quickly turn on/off GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

3. Remove unnecessary home screen widgets and live wallpaper: - Just because home screen widgets and live wallpaper consuming Battery power in the background.

4. Keep the screen timeout short: - In your phone's display settings menu, you should find an option labeled 'Screen Timeout' or something similar. This setting controls how long your phone's screen stays on. Every second counts here, so set your timeout to the shortest available time. On most Android phones, the minimum is 15 seconds. If your screen timeout is currently set to 2 minutes, consider reducing that figure to 30 seconds or less.

5. Don't leave apps running in the background: - Todays Android smartphones have multitasking ability to run more than one app at a time. It also burns a lot of energy, because every app you run uses a share of your phone's processor cycles. By killing apps that you aren't actually using, you can drastically reduce your CPU's workload and cut down on its power consumption. So kill all apps which are running in background. I like an app called Advanced Task Killer, which has an auto-kill feature.

6. Do not use vibrate: - Unfortunately vibrating uses much more power than playing a ringtone does. In contrast, the vibration motor rotates a small weight to make your whole phone shake. That process takes a lot more power. If you don't want to be disturbed audibly, consider turning off all notifications and leave the phone in view so you can see when a new call is coming in.

7. Turn off non-essential notifications: - Almost every app now polls the internet in search of updates, news, messages, and other information. When it finds something, the app may chime, light up your screen and display a message, make your LED blink, or do all of the above. It is consuming your battery life.

Some of the best Utilities Android

Some of the best Utilities Android

Utilities

AppGarden Lite
Free
The interface looks dated, but AppGarden Lite is a lightweight, backwards-compatible container with dozens of useful utilities, from conversion charts to a barcode scanner to a password generator. You can bookmark your favorite utilities for quick access. My favorites folder includes the QR scanner, stopwatch, tip calculator, currency calculator, Urban Dictionary lookup, and a calorie calculator.

avast! Mobile Security
Free
This completely free app packs in a ton of security features, like remote wipe, remote-lock, app management, safe Web browsing, a battery manager, and as an added bonus, a top-rated anti-virus engine that passed AV-Test's test with flying colors. It's also incredibly light. However it lacks a backup feature so make sure you sync it to your computer.

aDownloader
Free
There are lots of BitTorrent clients out there, but I like the old favorite aDownloader because it's easy to use and relatively crash-free. It also has a killer feature: the ability to pause and resume downloads. I haven't encountered any file-size limits, either.

Auto Memory Manager
Free
When a computer needs a performance boost, one of the most obvious ways is to upgrade or at least, manage memory; the same goes for mobile devices. Auto Memory Manager is an ad-supported app that provides detailed memory information, and lets you set memory priority on apps. It's worth downloading when your Android phone begins to feel sluggish.

Beautiful Widgets
$2.89
The Beautiful Widgets app lets you customize your phone’s homescreen, with weather reports, clocks, battery status, and different elements. It’s a simple app that makes your Android’s homescreen more useful to you, based on what information you want to see. And, as the name implies, it does it with grace.

Maxthon Internet Browser
Free
If I could personify Maxthon, he'd be a crazy genius. This HTML5-ready Chinese invention is packed with endless configurations like advanced gesturing (that goes beyond that offered by Dolphin HD), www/WAP toggling, fetching, and day/night mode. You can even personalize it to rename the app, select a different icon for the app, and change its skin.

History Eraser Pro
Free
History Eraser Pro makes it simple to delete junk off your phone. The app walks you through all sorts of data, from text messages to browser history to cached files, and then it wipes them in one shot.

Juicedefender
Free
Do you love everything about your Android except its crappy battery life? JuiceDefender Ultimate is a popular app that conserves battery life by disabling the most draining components, specifically 3G/4G connectivity, when your phone is idle. You can get the free lite version, but I'd invest in the Ultimate version which lets you customize when to disable a signal; for example, if you're listening to Pandora you wouldn't want it to go offline simply because your phone went idle.

Nova Launcher Prime
$4
There are quite a few launchers available in Google Play that replace your stock phone homescreen interface with something more customizable. Nova Launcher Prime not only gives you settings to play with, but it's also super-fast and smooth. If you're not willing to part with four bucks, try the free version, called Nova Launcher.

Lookout Premium for Android
Free
Lookout doesn't just promise security, it promises peace of mind on your Android device, which includes recovery solutions in case of loss, theft, or wipeout. The free version offers Find My Phone feature, automatic backup and restore functions. However, I'd shell out for the Premium ($2.99/month or $29.99/year, direct) edition which adds safe browsing; remote lock/wipe; app permissions management; and backup for contacts, call history, and pictures.

Speed Test
Free
Is your file suddenly taking forever to download? If it's your network's fault, Speed Test will prove it. Tap to test your network connectivity in less than 30 seconds, showing upload and download times, real-time graphs showing connection consistency, and other detailed reporting to shove in your carrier's face when they try to blame it on something else.

OnLive
Free
OnLive for Android lets you play current-generation console and PC games on your Android device, by streaming them from OnLive's servers. It works best with 4G connectivity and most games require a wireless game controller.

Opera Mini 7
Free
If you're on a data diet, Opera Mini 7 is the fastest, most backward-compatible mobile browser on the market. You won't get Flash support or all the features in Dolphin Browser HD, but Opera's servers compress webpages so much that Mini only requires one-tenth of the bandwidth of a traditional mobile browser.

SwiftKey Keyboard
$3.99
Swiftkey is a truly impressive keyboard replacement, packing a smart keyboard that suggests the next word before you type it. The company boasts that their language model can sometimes let you dash off whole sentences without typing, though it includes a Swype-like input method called Flow.

Swype Keyboard
Free
Veteran users will be familiar with Swype's killer keyboard feature—being able to swipe your finger across a few letters to form entire words. The full version of the app also includesa smart machine learning engine, multiple keyboard configurations, talk-to-text dictation, multiple language support and hand writing. It's a sprawling app that makes mobile typing a breeze.

Tasker
$6.49
Tasker is…ingenious. It lets you quickly program commands for your phone, like automatically turning on your music when you plug in earphones, or automatically turning off Wi-Fi when you put your device face down. Yes, I totally buy its tagline: "turn your smartphone into a geniusphone."

X-plore
Free

X-Plore is a great way to look at an Android's file system, and its many added features are solid bonuses. Use it to perform file operations like copy, rename, or create new folders. With X-plore, users can access Picasa albums, browse SQlite database files, zip and unzip files, and explore shared folders on Windows servers and PCs.

How you Boost Your 3G Speeds

Boost Your 3G Speeds

This can benefit you of getting 3g speeds on 2g, like me.just you need to switch to 'wcdma only' mode.

Follow

1) download this software called 3g/4g speed optimizer from market

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...cHRpbWl6ZXIiXQ..

2) Download this script manager
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result

3) Download the 3G turbcharger script by zeppelinrox from HERE

NOTE: you might want to compare the speed differences after and then of this tweak. If you, then download the NQ mobile security app from herehttps://play.google.com/store/apps/d...RpdmlydXMyMCJd and it should give you a small network meter which shows current network speed. download it, start it, and then download something from the play store to see how much speed you are getting. Its going to get increased soon anyway
Now Follow ahead

Start 3g/4g speed optimizer
-choose network speed as 12/28/7-max speed
-check on down speed increase
-now click on apply tweak.

!!!RESTART YOUR DEVICE!!!

Now open script manager
-browse to the downloaded 3g turbocharger text file
-check on superuser icon(N00BS: the android skeleton icon)
-click on run. script will load. wait till it asks to make a selection...
-scroll up and see what setting you need. fast, faster or fastest. I would recommend fastest. enter the option number.
-again enter the option to reboot.

thats it!
After reboot, your 3G speeds should be increased

To check your speeds, again download something from play store, something bigger than 2-3 megabytes would be preferable as it lets you see how far the speeds can get.

NOTE 2: this may not work for everyone, if it doesn't for you, dont blame me.

Android top 5 Tricks

Top five tricks-----

1-music masti
Android's built-in Music app is pretty capable -- and for Jelly Bean users (both 4.1 and 4.2), you'll find the ability to equalize your music has been baked right in. Once you're playing a song, hit the three dots in the upper-right corner and select "Equalizer." You'll be able to select from presets such as "Folk" and "Heavy Metal," and you can even drag the five sliders yourself to fine-tune based on what you're listening to at the moment. Down below are extra controls: drag to adjust the amount of bass boost applied. There’s also a "3-D effect," some software processing that makes the music sound a little deeper. Those options are only available when headphones are plugged in, since they wouldn't make much of a difference to the sound quality of your phone's built-in speaker.
2. Keep your storage space clean and tidy
It seems like the on-board storage space on smartphones is never enough. That's why moving your stuff – music, videos, apps – onto a microSD card is a good idea. Also, try to get rid of apps and games that you don't use since these occupy space as well. Just go to Settings > Apps and uninstall whatever software isn't needed. To get a better idea as to what files and folders really take up the most storage space, getDiskUsage from the link. It represents visually each folder with a rectangle – the bigger the rectangle, the more space it occupies. Then just move or delete all the stuff you don't need using a using a file manager. ES File Explorer is one we'd recommend.
NOTE: Don't delete any files or folders unless you're absolutely sure they aren't in use by an app or the operating system!
3. Monitor what apps are loaded and running
When a smartphone is turned on, it loads a whole bunch of apps and services that run in the background. Most (if not all) of these are harmless, but others just sit there, taking up memory and keeping the CPU busy. Autorun Manager is one of the apps that can show you what software is loaded on start-up and what's running on your device. Feel free to disable or uninstall apps that you don't need.
4. Avoid suspicious ad-supported apps
We have nothing against ad-supported software, but some apps take that concept to the extreme, with ads being displayed on the notification bar. Some even add links to shady search engines to your home screen and suspicious bookmarks to the browser. These apps should be avoided since their ads consume data and battery life, not to mention that they might put your private information at risk. To see what ad-supported apps you have installed on your Android device, give Lookout Ad Network Detector a try.
5. Monitor apps' battery usage
There is a built-in battery monitoring tool in the Android operating system, accessible by going to Settings > Battery. Keep an eye out for apps that consume excessive amounts of power without being used that often.
